01 July 2011: Moni George speaks to Qatar Today: From Mobile to Cloud
Moni George - Deputy General Manager, COS, Mannai
Mannai is Qatar's largest Systems Integrator and the leading organisation in the region that provides end-to-end, reliable IT solutions, by partnering with the likes of Oracle, Microsoft, SAP and ESRI. They help these partners to fine-tune and customise their products to meet the needs of the local enterprises. Moni George says, "Our Company has really grown in the last 10 years, from 120 employees to over 700. We have made acquisitions in countries like India and Jordan to serve this country. We are focusing a lot on the cloud because we understand this is what the market wants; it brings down the cost-of-ownership and eases maintenance issues. It's a win-win situation for the customer and vendors like us."
"ERP is the largest selling solution today, followed by BI. As a company, we have made tremendous investments here, created many verticals which addressed the needs of the market. We have developed an ERP solution called ManERP, which is being leveraged by about 25 customers. We have a team of developers in India who are working specifically on this."
"Regarding mobile applications, we have been diligent enough to start with the banks, which use our applications to supply their customers with fund transfer functionality on their mobile-devices, as well as the ability to check their balance. Banks and financial institutions were the first to embrace this technology, but now government departments are also leveraging it. Perhaps the greatest success we've had in providing quality e-solutions was the development and implementation of the Self-Service Payment kiosk, developed for the Ministry of Interior. The aim was to improve the time-consuming, traditional payment transactions, by providing a 24/7 self-service kiosk that would facilitate most of the e-services provided by the Ministry, including issuance of exit-permits, traffic violation settlements and visa renewals. The users are verified through their Smart Cards, IRIS Scans or Biometric fingerprints, and can also pay for the services used, on the spot, through the integrated MOI payment solution within these terminals. These kiosks have been placed at Malls, MOI branch offices, and other such strategic locations within Qatar," he added.

It also reinforces the fact that processes followed at ManSoft provide a focused framework to achieve higher levels of service quality, improved schedules and increased user satisfaction.
According to the Mannai management - "The successful appraisal under CMMI for Development model is important for our clients, as it demonstrates the maturity of our processes. Our Journey towards CMMI L3
Great team effort, hard work with meticulous planning of Ms. Vinita and Mr. Prasad along with PMO team, Software Engineering Process Group (SEPG) members and all employees of Mannai COS and ManSoft lead to the feat of SEI-CMMI Level 3 maturity appraisal for both the companies. Mr. Moni George's vision and behind the scene support as the sponsor for the maturity evolution is a key contributor for this success.
QMS Definition
This vast process started when Ms. Vinita and Mr. Prasad along with the SEPG team started working on Quality Management System (QMS) by defining processes, templates, check-list, guidelines and standards. This entire activity of QMS definition was achieved in a record time of one and a half months. The first QMS was released in the month of Jan'2010. This continuously evolving framework got further refined and was rephrased as SPINE (Software Process Improvement for attaiNing Excellence). SPINE (as the name suggests) is envisaged as the backbone for all organization processes. This was followed by conducting multiple awareness sessions on SPINE (meaning of process definitions, usage of templates, checklists, forms etc.) to the stakeholders.
QMS Implementation
With the identification of Pilot projects started the journey for implementation of QMS. To keep a track on progress and ensure continuous evolution of QMS, various activities were undertaken. Organization Training (OT) functions were formed for catering to the training needs of the whole organization. Audit group started auditing projects and support functions on a monthly basis. SEPG met fortnightly to discuss the progress on QMS implementation and process improvement suggestions.
Appraisal
External audit (by Nihilent Technology) was conducted in the month of April to verify the extent of implementation and gauge the preparedness of the organization for CMMI Level 3 appraisal. A Practice Implementation Indicator Description (PIID) workshop was conducted for the teams of the pilot projects, subsequent to which, each project under the guidance of PMO, prepared their respective PIID document.
The most awaited final Appraisal for SEI-CMMI Level 3 was conducted in the month of July 2010. This appraisal was conducted by Kiran Chaudhari (Senior Manager- Quality at Nihilent Technologies) and he was ably supported by our SEI-CMMI Ver. 1.2 trained Appraisal Team Members (ATMs) comprising of Prasad Mahamuni, Narendhiran Vijayakumar, Sithick Sahubar, Shashank Vaidya, Bidya Mohanty and Dipal Bhavsar. There was offline verification well as interviews of relevant stakeholders known as Functional Area Representatives FAR members.
On 21st July 2010, Mannai Trading Company WLL (COS Division) & ManSoft System Pvt. Ltd. successfully completed the Final Appraisal for SEI-CMMI Level 3 within record time, covering all eligible verticals and projects.
Mr. Kiran, Nihilent Technologies quotes -
"The best part of Mannai COS and ManSoft is the experienced SEPG Team; since they have past experience, for them the CMMi journey was just to follow the processes and take early action on bottlenecks. Most of the project teams here demonstrate abundant enthusiasm in following a disciplined and defined process framework (The Mannai proprietary QMS Process Framework) to get the best benefits for their projects. The appraisal team was keen to understand weaknesses and the corresponding improvement opportunities to further enrich QMS. As a Lead Appraiser, it was my one of the best experiences to work with such a motivated team"
Kudos to the team - Vinita, Prasad, Hina, Hema, Sruthi and everyone who have contributed directly or indirectly towards this mega achievement.
Well said by Michael Jordan "Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships".
